Therapeutic Yoga
SomaYoga Therapeutic Yoga is a blend of somatics, therapeutic yoga practices, and classic asana that when implemented together build mobility, stability, and strength in body, mind, and spirit. Thomas Hannah defines somatics as the awareness, experiencing, and feeling of sensations of the body from the inside. Somatics asks us to practice from a place of interoception—the ability to sense and understand what is happening within the body and then letting this guide and inform our decisions. The methodology of somatics includes reeducating muscles through slow, small movements designed to increase sensory awareness and release tension due to stress and/or injury. Somatics efficiently and effectively creates more mobility and consciousness that will bring transformation from within.
Therapeutic yoga practices bring a stabilizing component to the release of tension and increased mobility within the body. Therapeutic yoga practices help build a balance of tension and integrity within the muscles by working within the range of motion of the muscles; thereby creating more functional movement patterns that help the body move more freely in all activities engaged in. Therapeutic yoga also addresses the relationship between the spine, hips, and shoulders; helping to build increased and balanced stability in these core areas of the body.
As a person creates mobility and stabilization throughout the body, bringing a higher level of function and freedom, classic asana can then be incorporated to build strength and stamina. Classic asana yoga practices can bring a fuller expression and integration of movement patterns to the mobility and stability that has been created through somatics and therapeutic yoga practices.
